About Us
Meet Ms. Mary
Mary was just 3 years old when she joined her older sisters in tap dance through the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department, a program she stayed with through high school after joining San Diego Civic Dance Arts in the 7th grade.
Her gymnastics training also started at the local recreation center, learning an arial and backh
Mary was just 3 years old when she joined her older sisters in tap dance through the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department, a program she stayed with through high school after joining San Diego Civic Dance Arts in the 7th grade.
Her gymnastics training also started at the local recreation center, learning an arial and backhandspring in Kindergarten and placed in the "Big Kids" class. She was especially good at bars, with a cast to hand stand and a kip at a young age.
She went on to cheer in high school at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace and was on the San Diego Rebels All Star cheer team it's very first year.
Mary graduated with a Bachelor’s in English from San Diego State University, where she was also team Captain of the cheerleading squad during the days of Marshall Faulk (who is now considered the greatest running back of all time); the level of excitement in the crowd and on the field was mind-blowing and cheerleading couldn't have been more fun!
While in college, Mary held multiple leadership roles in the performing arts, including Gymnastics Program Director at the Mira Mesa Recreation Center for 7 years, teaching tap, jazz, and hip hop at San Diego Civic Dance Arts for 7 years, coaching stunt teams with Championship Cheerleading, and working as a a junior college Tap Instructor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA.
For the next 20 years, Mary hung up her dance shoes and worked as an Executive Assistant to C-level executives across San Diego County, a job she enjoyed up until pandemic. After pandemic, Mary made the switch back to teaching and coaching full time, which is her true love and passion.
At San Diego Gymnastics, Mary coached for four years Levels 1 and 2 all around gymnastics, Advanced Tumbling, Hot Shots Pre-Team, and two performance groups, Demo Team and Demo Minis, who perform locally at community events.
At the same time, she taught tap, ballet and hip hop with Dance to Evolve at the Poway Community Center in San Diego, where she won San Diego's top choreography award for all categories 2 out of 2 years with a hip hop number the first year and a ballet routine the second.
Mary’s teaching portfolio also includes working with special needs students at Arms Wide Open, where she taught hip hop, line dancing, and rhythmic gymnastics in El Cajon, CA.
With all of that on her plate Mary yearned for more, and that is when she started coaching cheer with Charlene's Dance N Cheer. Starting with just one afterschool cheer program weekly, soon her schedule grew to include preschool and baby ballet, preschool and baby gymnastics, and preschool tap.
Mary got to broaden her horizons further and added preschool science, messy art, baby beats, and musical theater to her teaching repertoire.
In August 2025, Mary and her husband packed up their home and two dogs and moved to Yuma, AZ to be close to her young grandson, who competes in jiu-jitsu.
Today, Mary’s career continues to be dedicated to empowering students of all ages and abilities, and she does that by fostering confidence, joy, and a love of movement to her new students at Yuma Gymnastics and Dancer's Workshop of Yuma.
She loves her new home, and how nice everyone has been here. But mostly, she is really impressed with the talent!
She looks forward to helping students achieve their goals and makes it her mission for continuous improvement through positive encouragement, technique, and having fun!
